Proclamation No. 81/1997

A PROCLAMATION TO RATIFY THE UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION IN THOSE COUNTRIES EXPERIENCING SERIOUS DROUGHT AND-OR DESERTIFICATION PARTICULARLY IN AFRICA

WHEREAS, Ethiopia had, on 15 of October 1994, signed at paris the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in those Countries Experiencing Serious Drught and-or Desertification, particulary in Africa.

WHEREAS, it is stipulated in the Convention that the Convention enters into force on the ninetieth day after the date of deposit of the fiftieth instrument of ratification or otherwise;

WHEREAS, the House of Peoples’ Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has ratified said Convention at its session held on the 24th day of June, 1997;

NOW, THEREFORE, in accordance with Article 55 sub-Articles (1) and (12) of the Constition, of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia it is hereby proclaimed as follows:

1. Short Title

This Proclamation may be cited as the ""United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and-or Desertification, Particularly in Africa Ratification Proclamation No. 81-1997.”

2. Ratification of the Convention

The United Nations Convention to Combat Deserification in those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and-or Desertification, Particularly in Africa, signed at paris on 15 October 1994, is ratified.

3. Power of the Environmental Protection Authority

The Environmental Protection Authority is hereby empowered to implement the Convention in cooperation with the concerned federal and regional government organs, non-governmental organizations as well as with communities.

4. Effective Date

This Proclamation shall enter into force as of the 24th day of June, 1997.
